Jean (Lambert) Noël was born in Montreal in 1940. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in 1960 he began studies at Montreal’s École des beaux-arts where he quickly took an interest in sculpture. By 1963 he had distanced himself from the classic academic approach and started developing his personal artistic vision. He experimented with new materials such as moulded plastics while testing the material properties of flexibility, elasticity, lightness and malleability. His artworks can be found in the collections of Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Musée de Toulon; Musée des beaux-arts, Montréal; Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec; Musée des beaux-arts du Canada; Art Gallery of Ontario; Musée du Bas-Saint-Laurent, Rimouski, Québec; et Musée Ziem, Martigues, France, among others. The artist now works in Paris and Marseille.
