Janet Werner was born in 1959 in Winnipeg and resides in Montreal. She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute and her MFA from Yale University. While her works seem romantic and at times painfully sweet — gorgeously painted surfaces sometimes covered with cute animals, snowglobes, figurines and beautiful young women bridging the realm of cutesy kitsch and still life - there is a disjunction, a sense of alienation and psychological remove, between the iconic figures and the constructed landscapes they inhabit. The paintings treat not only ideals of innocence and beauty, but also the loss or failure of those ideals.
