George Zimbel was born in Woburn, Massachusetts in 1929. He studied photography extensively with the Photo League and earned a scholarship to the workshop of New York School artist Alexey Brodovich before earning his art degree from Columbia College in New York. Zimbel’s fine eye for composition, eloquence and uncanny sense of timing attracted the attention of many publications whose patronage permitted Zimbel access to a wide range of subjects. In addition to winning him the CAPIC award in 2001 among others, Zimbel’s work has garnered him membership in the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. His work appears in the collections of several museums, such as the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and in numerous private and corporate collections. Zimbel lives and works in Montreal.
