Travis McEwen uses a fierce and codified colour palette to explore issues of gender, marginalization, identity and social bias. Delicate and emotive portraits use formal elements of size, colour and light along with sensitive paint handling to instil an emotional response. The viewer connects with the fragility and ambiguity of the invented subjects in a space where the fantasy of the perfectibility of the human body is met with the reality of imperfection. McEwen was born in Red Deer Alberta in 1985, he completed his BFA at University of Alberta and his MFA studies in Painting and Drawing at Concordia University. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Alberta, New Brunswick and Québec and his works are found in corporate and private collections across Canada.
