  STEPHEN LACK OTHER ARTISTS

Born in Montreal in 1946, Stephen Lack studied sculpture at the University of Guanajuato in San Miguel, Mexico, where he obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1968. His first solo exhibit in 1974 at Véhicule Art in Montréal provided him with a stepping stone towards being recognized as one of the seminal artists of the mythic New York East Village scene of the early 80’s. He is particularly known for his use of color, challenging compositions and content all the while respecting the omnipresent classicism and formalism. Lack’s artistic journey leads him to create paintings where atmosphere is replaced by confrontation as the essential element in his work. His art has been exhibited throughout Canada and the United States as well as in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan. Many of his works are included in museums and corporate collections including those of the Royal Bank of Canada, the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, the Progressive Corporation, the Speyer Family Collection, the Brooklyn Museum, the Université du Québec in Montreal, and the Bureau of Foreign Affairs Canada.
