Born in 1958 in Rawdon, Québec, François Lacasse lives in Montreal and teaches painting at l’École des arts visuels et médiatiques of l’Université du Québec à Montréal since 2001. Lacasse develops his paintings through a process of transformation that takes place directly on the canvas making them as much objects as images. His technique is pouring paint onto stretched canvas laid horizontally. Characterized by an investment in colour, materiality and application methods, Lacasse’s recent work alludes to the history of abstract painting, particularly the style practiced in America in the fifties. It is based mainly on an enumerative approach with a complex tension between subjectivity and desire. His woks can be found in various private and corporate collections, and in Canadian museums.
